Hot foil stamping is a printing technique used to apply a metallic or coloured foil onto various surfaces, typically leather, cardstock etc, to create a decorative or eye-catching design. It is commonly used in the printing industry for various applications such as product packaging, stationery, business cards, book covers, and invitations.

The process involves the use of a metal die, which is heated, and a roll of foil, which is typically made of thin polyester film coated with a thin layer of metal. The material to be stamped is placed between the die and the foil, and pressure is applied to transfer the foil onto the surface.

The die is usually made of brass or magnesium and is custom-made to match the specific design or text that needs to be stamped. It has a raised surface that corresponds to the desired design, and it is heated to a specific temperature. The foil, which comes in various colours and finishes, is positioned between the die and the surface to be stamped.

When the heated die is pressed against the foil and surface, the heat activates the adhesive layer on the foil, causing it to stick to the surface. The pressure and heat help to transfer the foil onto the surface, leaving a shiny, metallic or coloured imprint.

 

Once the foil has adhered to the surface, the die is removed, leaving behind the stamped design.
